Why YOU Should Go to the Next Comic Convention!

Last weekend, I was a part of the Artist Alley/Writer’s Way for Superman Celebration in Metropolis, Illinois. For those that don’t know, Superman Celebration is a three day event celebrating Superman as well as other super heroes. There were all sorts of events within the event: autograph signings, costume contests, food trucks, vendors, trivia contests, movie screenings and even a wedding! Metropolis also features several permanent Superman attractions including a giant Superman statue, a Superman museum and other super hero related sights.

Metropolis is a special place, and while the event-runners pride themselves on saying that Superman Celebration is “more than a convention” it very much feels like a convention in all the right ways. While reflecting on how great this particular weekend was, it reminded me of the special feeling I get at most conventions. This analogy is for the millennials, but remember those first couple weeks of Pokemon Go? We were so happy and nice to each other. We’d meet up at random places around town, we helped strangers find the Pokemon they were looking for, and we were exceptionally nice to each other, for no other reason than we were all enjoying the same game? Comic cons are like that, but instead of just Pokemon, it’s every pop culture thing. Seriously, whether you’re a fan of super heroes, anime, horror movies, video games, and almost anything at all, there’s hundreds of other people just like you that love the same things as you, that want to talk to strangers about what they love and celebrate what they love together. Strangers will help you find your way if you get lost. Strangers will take photos for you. Some will even love your costume so much that they want a picture with you. Every once in a while, you’ll have some dingus acting like a doofus, but for the most part it’s an incredibly positive environment.

You probably don’t want to read a list of all the things you can do at a convention (and I certainly don’t want to type it out, haha!) but there’s a ton to do. I’d encourage you to click on an event or two on my tour dates page and just scroll through their schedule of events. Conventions are all different sizes, some are gigantic, and some are small, but the positive atmosphere has always been present. I STRONGLY encourage you and your people, to check one out when you get the chance!
